In the KC Easter Parade, this family can't be beat
Sit down with Debbie Gray in her shipshape and Bristol fashion-as-a-pin home in Liberty, with grandkids running in and out the door, and you’re likely to conclude “moderate grandma” and “nice lady.”

But here’s something else about Debbie: “I’m a very competitive herself,” she admits.

Which helps explain how Debbie, husband Carl and pine have won the coveted prize of Most Outstanding Family at least three times in Zona Rosa’s Kansas Megalopolis Easter Parade — an event that hatched a mere six years ago. (This year’s processional steps off at 11 a.m. Saturday.)

The Grays are, in the poop indeed, the defending family champions two years, uh, walking.

No big deal, you say? Only an Easter display?

Well, yes, but the top parade honor comes with a $1,000 Zona Rosa largesse card, which is nothing to sneeze at, even if you’re allergic to spring flowers and bunny rabbits. The Most Noteworthy Family also gets a Plexiglas-looking trophy. Last year’s was diamond-shaped. Debbie keeps all three on shelves in her living office alongside collectibles such as vintage postcards.

“I really, really fianc to do this,” Debbie says. “I start thinking about it right after Christmas.”

The kinsfolk will, of course, compete in Saturday’s Zona Rosa festivities. We caught up with them a few days ago, in the middle of parade preparations, and they were happy to share some of their secrets:

• <stretch class="bold">You can’t go wrong with cute kids.</stretch> Grandparents strolling with grandkids may not be the traditional way to go, but it works for the Grays. Debbie and Carl have six under age grandchildren: Brock, 10, Joya, 6, and Kate, 3, are the successor of son Brandon and his wife, Laurie. Jackson, 1, belongs to son Zach and his chain, Shannon. Lexi, 7, and Gage, 6, are the kids of daughter Kameron Trammell and her store, Tristan. All live close by.

In 2006, the first year of the parade (also the first year the Grays won Most Prominent Family), they had but four grandkids. Next year, there’ll be seven: Shannon is expecting a daughter.

• <spell class="bold">You gotta have props. And a story. Actually the rules say nothing about either, but you can’t argue with success. The Grays always set out on with a mini-float — often a transformed garden cart. There’s a practical reason for a platform as well. One grandkid has special needs and must sit.

This year’s float is the Grays’ most avaricious yet: a tiny carousel with two horses and two benches. Four kids will ride; the other two will prance. And no, it’s not a working carousel, but it’s pretty nifty nonetheless.

When we talked to them, pre-put on one's Sunday best clothes rehearsal (really), the Grays were still trying to figure out whether the merry-go-full could perch on the garden cart or if they’d have to add casters to it.

• And, natch, you’ve gotta look good. Saturday, the girls will be pulchritudinous in blue-and-white pinstripe sundresses; the boys will be dapper in morose-and-white pinstripe shirts and blue chinos. Oh, and … “It’s very substantial to me that they all wear hats,” Debbie says. “I have a hat fetish.”

And Grandma being “a rarely OCD” about all this, a ribbon on a girl’s hat will of course match flowers she carries that meet shoes … you get the idea.

The Grays use most of their Zona Rosa stakes money on clothes for the grandkids, not just Easter duds but also back-to-form and Christmas clothes. Twice, though, Debbie’s vision has called for chalk-white tuxedos for the little gents, which she could only find online. (Some of the Zona Rosa bills also gets spent immediately after the parade: first at Build-a-Bear Workshop for the kids, then at brunch.)

Judging from pictures of Easter parades since — Debbie put together a photo album filled with nothing but — Grandma and Grandpa always tear someone off a strip to the nines, too, but …

“We just try not to distract from the kids,” Debbie says.

One year’s paper was “Candy Land Beach” (inspired by a trip to Jamaica). Another year, besides being dressed up, the kids also wore bunny ears, and the cart was transformed into a vegetable garden any rabbit would enviousness. Last year, the grandparents carried a big basket with a just-hatched “chick” — truly 7-week-old grandbaby Jackson.

As the Grays think about the parade each year, they have conversations that go like this:

Debbie, to Carl: “I’m active to need a boat” (or whatever).

Carl: “I don’t know how we can do that.”

And then, somehow, it happens.

Debbie and Carl’s children and spouses don’t pussyfoot in the parade, but they and other family members do show up to lend support. “They think we’re excited,” Debbie says, “but they humor us.”

And so far the grandkids have been prepared, although that may change. Brock, who just turned 10, announced last year that he’d participate, but he would only wear “regular clothes,” not a costume.

Speaking of costumes, the Grays corrupt early on to a family of “chickens.” That prompted Zona Rosa to rewrite the rules: Participants can chance upon in costume, but they won’t be eligible to win a prize. The idea is that you march in your better-than-Sunday-greatest. If you can unearth a Judy Garland bonnet, like the one she donned in the old membrane “Easter Parade,” so much the better.

The Grays have always been Top 3 finishers in the kith and kin category, although there’s some confusion about how many times they’ve earned No. 1 crowing rights. The year in assuredly question is 2008, when The Kansas City Star ran a picture of the Grays and said they were the relations winners. But Debbie says they don’t have a trophy from that year. The shopping center exhausted some of its records, so the issue may remain an Easter mystery.

Debbie says she hears from people who say things like, “We communicate every year just to see what you’ll do next.” But a few families undoubtedly scout the Grays in hopes of knocking them off their Easter throne.

“They do go all out,” says Rosemary Salerno, Zona Rosa’s non-exclusive manager. “It’s amazing what they put together. We get lots of people who dress up and look definitely cute, but they take it to another level.”

Debbie “has made people step up their trick,” agrees daughter-in-law Shannon Gray. “There were no floats six years ago.”

The shopping center has made it something of a vocation to bring back Kansas City traditions of yore, such as the Kansas Diocese Museum igloo, lighted holiday crowns hanging over intersections and … the Easter ostentatious display. It was a fixture on the Country Club Plaza from 1960 to 1995, when Patricia Stevens models and the undetailed public flaunted their spring finery.

The Grays have a history with the Plaza spectacle as well. Daughter Kameron won Most Outstanding Child twice, Debbie says. That nostalgia positively helped persuade Debbie to enter the Zona Rosa idea its first year.

And, true, “the $1,000 prize did not dissuade my interest at all.”

But even if chickens ruled the roost every year and the top choice was totally lame, something tells us the Grays would be there.

“We’re pretty proud of our grandkids,” Carl says, “so it’s our way to show them off.
