A watch alarm goes off at 4:30 a.m., sending off tired grumbling around the encamp. We all tumble out of the tent, packing up some gear and putting on our headlamps. Sunrise will be about 6:15 a.m. this morning, and we’ve still got more than 200 vertical meters to climb in the profound. Rudy, our guide, tells us we’ll have coffee after we’ve returned from the peak.

Illuminated by the moon and our lights, we climb the last spectacular bit of rock toward the top. Rudy leads us expertly up the steep trail, leaving behind the pine trees that annulus the base of the summit and up to the edge of the crater, where the sky is already glowing pink and orange in the east. In the coolness, we can see the tall peaks of Guatemala’s volcanic range. Behind us glimmers Volcán Tacaná, on the Mexican hem.
