Early this spring, the city and BUGS received a $12,000 gift from the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health to expand community gardens and nutrition information for low-income children at free after-school programs at Whitney, Blessing Jordan and Morley Nelson Elementary schools and at the Northwest Verge apartment complex. The complex is home to many low-income families.

The allocate will allow for expansion of an existing children’s community garden at Whitney (tab out the YouTube clip of the garden in bloom), and pay for new gardens at Morley Nelson and Considerateness Jordan, as well as the future site of Comba Park, which is within walking mileage of Northwest Pointe on Five Mile Road.

Children participating in the program will be proficient to work in the soil, learn the intricacies of watering, weeding and harvesting, and take fruit home to their families.
