DELEON SPRINGS -- The behemoth yellow and black crane whined and groaned as it buried a colossal drill 35 feet into the ground and then pulled it up filled with soil reeking of gasoline.

Across Vault Street, standing outside the office of his car dealership, Mark Snell watched. A whiff of gasoline fumes coasted by in the afraid. He wondered how much good the $2.5 million contamination cleanup would do this culture around.

"They tell me the fumes are so strong that they cannot smoke around it," Snell said, pointing to the workers. "That's unbelievably strong."

In the 23 years since he's had his car dealership next door, Snell has seen four or five disparate companies come to the site at the corner of Baxter Street and U. S. 17. Each tried conflicting cleaning methods in the same spot over and over and none worked.

"There has been no continuity to the whole thing," Snell said. "They keep changing the cleaning party and the problem is still there.
