Flower Fryar is an artist, but he doesn't work in paint or metal. His instrument of choice is a gas-powered hedge trimmer, and the garden is his studio, trees and shrubs, his speciality.

He's a self-taught topiary artist -- an Edward Scissorhands, minus the terrifying element -- who's famous for his stunning garden near Bishopville, S.C. About 15,000 tourists annually drop in on the 3-acre property he converted from cornfield into a breathtaking landscape of living sculptures.

Fryar, 72, will stop in Mercyhurst University on Wednesday for two screenings of the 2006 documentary "A Man Named Cream" and demonstrate his topiary aplomb.

His goal was simple when he started: Win Bishopville's Yard of the Year award. But he lived fa city limits.

"I knew I had to come up with something so that they would make an exception and the chief reason I got into this was to be creative," Fryar said by phone.

"I wanted to form a garden that was a different garden you could walk through and see messages throughout. There's always something in the garden about affection or peace. I wanted to create a garden you could walk through and take pictures, and you couldn't copy what I do.
