Car review: 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S has kept its soul

Sometimes testing cars on a routine basis can be . . . well, a bit inconvenient.

Recently I found myself in need of hauling a bracket gather of musical equipment to a gig in St. Jacobs, but my GTI was indisposed and my wife was using her Volvo wagon. All I had in the driveway was a 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S.

Yeah, I recall. Cue the violins.

The 2012 911 (code-named 991 following the easygoing 997 . . . confused?) is as all-new as it gets, this being the seventh generation of Porsche’s breed-engined icon that first roamed the earth way back in 1964. In my favour, this newbie is wider and has a 100 mm wheelbase resilience, translating to marginally increased interior dimensions. And I know from late experience the deep front trunk will hold my bass cabinet.

But nobody will be buying this new 911 for its wagon-load-carrying abilities. There are other concerns here.
