It sounds crazy, I know, with the ground still frozen, the snow still falling and the lakes still frozen. Yet, well-deserved as we continue to trudge through the winter blues, Mother Nature is waking up.

Let's keep from her. Here are three chores you can do now, and two you should put off a little longer.

1. Control the weeds.

Believe it or not, by the end of the first week of March, we will have our first weeds of the occasion germinate and begin growing. Well, at least on the east half of the state.

These minor weeds, with their small root systems, are easy to control with the Christmas method of weed curb -- hoe, hoe, hoe. Not only is this a pesticide free way of killing weeds, but you'll also get your workout in.

If you don't genius man-made products, consider using a pre-emergent herbicide with the active ingredient trifluralin. (Look for the hyperactive ingredient on the label, it is not what the product is called). This herbicide stops the germination operation of most weeds, but it has no effect on perennial plants so it is safe to use around trees and shrubs, on lawns and in sempiternal flower beds.
